The role of industrial sector in Indonesia is quite important. This is evident from the role of industrial sector in GDP, In 2016 the Industrial sector in Deli Serdang contributed 32 percent to the GRDP. Contribution is bigger than other sectors.

The Industrial Sector not only contributes in the economy through the added value of production but also contributes to the absorption of labor. The 2016 Economic Census Result shows that the industry sector absorbs about 16 million workers or 57 percent of the workforce work in the micro and small industry subsector (industry group with less than 20 employees).

Based on the 2016 Economic Census data, IMK inequality in Indonesia still exists, about 60 percent are on the island of Java. Need equity of industrial development and industrial area according to the potential of each region's natural resources become the main target. Various policies in the industry sector require accurate data and information.

Provision of Micro Small Industry data, Central Bureau of Statistics conducting Micro and Small Industries 2017 (VIMK17) Survey. This survey is expected to provide an overview of the IMK sector. In general, it aims to find out the profile of micro and small industry potential areas in Indonesia that can be used as material for planning macro economic activities.

VIMK17 was implemented in several potential IMK districts / cities in all provinces in Indonesia with a sample of 90,231 businesses. The target of data collection is the business / micro industry company with a workforce of 1 - 4 people and small industry with a workforce of 5 - 19 people including employers / owners. Implementation of updating done in October 2017 while sample data collection was selected in November 2017 where officers have been trained in advance to get survey material.
