• In August 2021, three CPI cities in North Sumatra recorded deflation, namely Pematangsiantar 0.07 percent; Medan by 0.10 percent; and Gunung Sitoli by 0.10 percent. Meanwhile, Sibolga inflation was 0.05 percent; and Padangsidimpuan inflation 0.23 percent. Thus, the combined 5 CPI cities in North Sumatra in August 2021 deflation of 0.08 percent.
• In August 2021, Medan had 0.10 percent deflation or a decline in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 104.82 in July 2021 to 104.71 in August 2021. Deflation occurred due to a decline in prices from four expenditure groups, namely the food group, beverages, and tobacco by 0.32 percent; transportation group by 0.02 percent; recreation, sports, and culture groups by 0.16 percent; and the personal care and other services group by 0.39 percent. On the other hand, the four expenditure groups showed an increase in the index, namely the clothing and footwear group by 0.08 percent; household equipment, equipment, and routine maintenance group by 0.24 percent; health group by 0.09 percent; and the group providing food and beverages/restaurants by 0.04 percent. The other three groups did not experience changes in the index, namely the housing, water, electricity, and household fuel groups; information, communication, and financial services group; and education groups.
• The main commodities contributing to deflation during August 2021 in Medan include red chilies, broiler chicken, cayenne pepper, green mustard, long beans, tuna/ambu-ambu fish, and cucumbers.
• Of the 24 CPI cities on the island of Sumatra, 19 cities recorded deflation. The highest deflation was in Bandar Lampung at 0.53 percent with a CPI of 106.84 and the lowest was in Meulaboh at 0.03 percent with a CPI of 109.93.
