Ground Truth of Implementation of Mixed Method Development in Deli Serdang Regency

September 11, 2024 | BPS Activities

Lubuk Pakam, Wednesday, September 11, 2024 – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) continues to innovate in modernizing statistical business processes through Ground Truth activities for Mixed Method Development. This activity was carried out in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province, and is part of a series of working visits that have been ongoing since the previous day. In carrying out this activity, the Head of BPS Deli Serdang Regency, Herman, S.E., M.Sc., together with the Director of Census and Survey Methodology Development of BPS RI, Dr. Kadarmanto, M.A., and the Head of General Affairs and Middle Expert Computer Administrators of BPS North Sumatra Province, Rahmat Gustiar, S.Si., M.Sc., and Fadjar Wahyu Tridjono, S.Si., M.M. This activity involved taking coordinate points as part of the Mixed Method method by the BPS team, accompanied by the Head of Sekip Village, Rahmat. The taking of coordinate points was carried out in two sub-segments of the two segments located in Sekip Village and Tanjung Garbus. These points aim to observe the condition of rice fields in the field and match them with available satellite images. This aims to ensure that the topography seen in satellite images really matches the real conditions in the field. In this activity, BPS also utilizes big data with Earth Observation (EO) technology to calculate rice data. The use of EO technology is part of an effort to modernize the statistical business process at BPS. In addition, data from the Area Sample Framework (KSA) is also used to support the development of machine learning models that play a role in calculating rice data. To ensure the quality of the model developed, a comprehensive study is needed, including field validation activities or Ground Truth in representative areas and able to represent the characteristics of rice fields. This Ground Truth activity involves BPS organic workers at the district/city level, considering the target quantity of more optimal locations. This is done so that the data collected can be ensured to be accurate and reliable in developing a method for calculating rice data based on modern technology. By implementing this activity, BPS hopes to improve data accuracy and have a positive impact on the formulation of agricultural policies in the future.
