The horticultural sub-sector provides gross added value in the Indonesian economy, which reaches 196 trillion rupiah in 2017, but only contributes 1.44 percent of Indonesia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Meanwhile, of the total value added of the Agriculture sector which reached 1,785 trillion rupiah, the horticulture subsector only contributed around 11 percent.
The development of the horticultural subsector in addition to increasing the production of horticultural commodities also improves the welfare of farmers. The horticultural sub-sector plays an important role in increasing food security through the provision of horticultural products (vegetables, fruits and medicinal plants). In connection with this, data is needed that can describe the structure of costs, the profile of business farmers, and the business characteristics of horticultural crops. In meeting these data needs, a Horticultural Crop Business Cost Structure Survey was conducted in 2018 (SOUH2018).
Deli Serdang Regency consists of 22 sub-districts and 10 sub-districts to become samples of SOUH2018 activities. The business sample includes 12 commodities, namely: large chili, cayenne pepper, durian, ginger, siam, potato, cabbage, petai, banana, rambutan, salak, and tomato.
Officers before data collection have participated in training to understand methodology, concepts and definitions, and SOPs for conducting this survey, officers are expected to be able to master it and can produce more quality data
