Abstract

  • In May 2018, all CPI cities in North Sumatra experienced deflation, namely Sibolga by 0.07 percent; Pematangsiantar of 0.01 percent; Medan by 0.86 percent; and Padangsidangkan by 0.55 percent. Thus, North Sumatra in May 2018 experienced deflation of 0.74 percent.
  • In May 2017, the field of deflation was 0.86 percent or the index declined from 137.65 in April 2018 to 136.46 in May 2018. Deflation occurred due to price declines indicated by the decline in the index of three expenditure groups, the group foodstuffs of 3.67 percent; transportation, communication and financial services group by 0.35 percent; and the health group by 0.01 percent. Meanwhile, the group that experienced an increase in index, namely the group of finished food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco by 0.03 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel by 0.39 percent; clothing group by 0.30 percent; and the education, recreation and sports group by 0.01 percent.
  • Major commodities contributing to deflation during May 2018 in Medan, including red pepper, garlic, air transport, cayenne pepper, onion, cooking oil, and green pepper.
  • Of the 23 CPI cities on the island of Sumatra, 10 cities experienced deflation. The highest deflation occurred in Pangkal Pinang at 0.99 percent with the CPI of 137.93 and the lowest occurred in Pematang Siantar by 0.01 percent with the CPI of 137.09
